John Barry  NFS

John Barry received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the University of South Carolina, interning in the art department of a progressive Zoo where he learned how artistic creativity could effectively merge with the realm of commerce through visual communication.

These opportunities lead to a rewarding career in Hollywood, working in Movie Advertising Print Production incorporating graphic design, and through grand scale outdoor public displays.

Barry’s work comes from the excesses of those presentations as remnants of printed scrap become the working material for painted and collaged images; often abstractions and occasionally the landscapes that surround Los Angeles where he maintains his studio.

The current series, NFS, alludes to using materials that no longer serve their purpose — that of selling the consumer a ticket, a product or an experience.  Influenced by early 20th Century collage of most notably the German artist Kurt Schwitters, Barry brings a fresh look to the practice through extensive layering and the use of the contemporary materials he has accumulated over the past three decades.
